The Brady Camp Mission
To perpetuate the memory of the Grand Army of the Republic (GAR) and the men
who served the Union from 1861 to 1865.
- We shall educate the public on the mission of the Sons of Union Veterans
Civil War (SUVCW) and promote membership in the Col. James D. Brady Camp
#63.
- We will assist in the recovery, organization and preservation of Civil
War documents and records.
- We will support the National Park Service through our assistance in the
preservation of Civil War Battlefields and Monuments.
- We will assist in the organization, promotion and staffing of Civil War
memorial events.
- We will prepare Civil War memorial assessments for those monuments
within the local area.
- We will assist the SUVCW in national graves registration and erect
monuments on cites which contain the remains of Civil War veterans.
The Col.
James D. Brady Camp is proud to work to preserve, protect, and educate
the public on the
Siege of Petersburg
and the importance of this key
segment of the Civil War.
It is our goal to educate the public on the importance of these
sites. Our
long term project is to preserve Fort Alexander Hays, and to
install a Civil War Trails sign at the Fort.
The SUVCW Mission
The
Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War
is a 501(c)(4) non profit, patriotic and educational organization. It was
founded on Nov. 12, 1881
and was incorporated by an Act of Congress Aug. 20, 1954. The Sons of Union
Veterans of the Civil War is the legal heir to and representative of the Grand
Army of the Republic.
The Sons of Union
Veterans of the Civil War exists to:
·
Perpetuate the memory of the
Grand Army of the Republic (GAR)
and of the men who saved the Union in 1861 to 1865;
·
Assist in every
practicable way in the preservation and making available for research of
documents and records
pertaining to the Grand Army of the Republic and its members
·
Cooperate in doing
honor to all those who have patriotically served our country in any war
·
Teach patriotism and
the duties of citizenship, the true history of our country, and the love and
honor of our flag.
·
Oppose every
tendency or movement that would weaken loyalty to, or make for the destruction
or impairment of, our constitutional Union and
·
Inculcate and
broadly sustain the American principles of representative government, of equal
rights, and of impartial justice for all.
Our many activities and
projects include:
·
Through our Graves
Registration Committee, we seek out the graves of Union soldiers, Sailors,
and Marines
·
Damaged headstones
on known graves are replaced;
·
We observe the care
and upkeep of Civil War Monuments and Memorials, and notify the
proper authorities of any failure to do so.
·
Along with other
Veteran and Patriotic organizations we participate in ceremonies and parades
to honor the men and women who have served in the United States Military,
placing special emphasis on those who have sacrificed their life or limbs in the
service of their Country.
·
We also promote the
study and preservation of the history of the Union troops of 1861-1865 and
assist members in researching their ancestors' participation in the War of the
Rebellion.
We do this by
continuing the rituals, traditions and services of the
Grand Army of the
Republic.
These include:
·
the proper
observance of Memorial Day;
·
Allegiance to the
Government of the United States of America;
·
the teaching and
encouragement of Patriotism and love of Country;
·
the perpetuation of
its Free Institutions and the preservation of the Constitution.
